Frequently Asked Questions
The Typhoid Profile includes CBC, ESR, Urine Routine, Widal, Culture and Susceptibility from Blood, Typhi Dot tests for detection and diagnosis of Typhoid infections.
- The test is done in cases of suspected typhoid infections with clinical signs and symptoms of typhoid.
- In patients with history of recent visit to typhoid endemic areas.
- Patients with fever who have tested negative for Dengue, Malaria and other parasitic infections.
Patients with the following signs and symptoms should get tested:
- High fever with chills and headache
- Weakness and fatigue, muscle pain
- Stomach pain, diarrhoea, constipation
- History of water or food related infectious exposure
This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer. The urine sample is collected in a sterile container for further examination.
CBC test
A low WBC count may suggest: Viral infection, Severe bacterial infection, Dietary deficiency, Reaction to drugs
A high WBC count suggests: Infection/inflammation, Allergies, Lymphoma, Leukemia, Stress, Pregnancy, Corticosteroid treatment, Chronic infection
ESR test
High ESR result is a non-specific marker. Elevations may be seen in infections, inflammation, and chronic infections.
Urine Routine Examination
A high pus cell count and a high bacterial count indicates a probable infection.
Abnormal results indicate further tests are required.
Typhi Dot IgM
Positive result indicates presence of IgM antibodies against typhoid bacteria.
Positive result is detected within 2-3 days after infection.
Widal Test for Typhoid Serum
Presence of high titres for specific antibodies indicates the presence of Salmonella Typhi or Paratyphi. The results are to be correlated with time of sample collection, vaccination status and symptoms. This test can be positive in diseases other than typhoid
Culture Sensitivity Test
No growth: This means that bacterium could not be isolated from the collected sample
Growth: This means that bacterium was isolated from the sample. The sensitivity of the bacterium towards various antibiotics is also reported. This is considered gold standard test for diagnosis. The result should be correlated clinically.
- CBC test
- ESR test
- Urine routine test
- WIDAL test
- Complete blood count (CBC) evaluates cells circulating in blood i.e., red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets which determine general state of heath of an individual and diagnose the infection status in the individual.
- If any abnormality is detected, further tests are recommended
This test measures the sedimentation rate of red blood cells. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a non-specific marker which increases in infections, inflammation, chronic infection, autoimmune diseases, pregnancy, menstruation, hypothyroidism.
The test is used to measure and analyse any abnormalities detected in the urine sample. In case of detection of any abnormalities, further tests may be required.
Typhidot IgM is a test for the rapid diagnosis of IgM antibodies against Salmonella typhi.
The WIDAL test is used for detection of antibodies (against O & H antigens) Salmonella Typhi and Paratyphi infections in the blood serum.
This test is done to detect presence of bacteria in blood based on which the type and class of antibiotics can be decided for best possible treatment.
