Lipid Profile Test Overview

Cardiovascular disease is the top cause of death for  heart attacks and strokes, in asymptomatic people. Risk factors including age, smoking status, hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol are used by physicians to identify individuals likely to have an ischemic event & to evaluate cardiovascular risk. Lipid profile test measures total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, VLDL, LDL:Cholesterol ratio, HDL: Cholesterol ratio

A lipid profile is a group of blood tests. They determine the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. These are fatty acids in your blood. Your arteries can get blocked by unhealthy lipid levels. This raises your risk of coronary artery disease and stroke. Additionally, these can cause excessive weight gain.

In India, high cholesterol is a serious lifestyle illness. It is a sign of several deadly conditions. A waxy, fatty molecule called cholesterol is found in the blood. For vital processes like digestion, hormone synthesis, and vitamin D absorption, our body needs a certain quantity of cholesterol. However, if the levels rise above a particular point, it might develop into a chronic and inflammatory condition.

A lipid profile is a summary of the amount of good and bad fats that are present in your blood. Heart problems, diabetes, obesity, etc. are all associated with high cholesterol. A lipid profile must be performed on those who have certain illnesses or are more likely to develop them.

It may frequently be given as a component of a routine health checkup schedule. The probability of developing disorders linked to high cholesterol can be estimated using a lipid profile. Additionally, it is carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of a certain medication or treatment for lowering cholesterol, as well as lipid-lowering dietary modifications.

In asymptomatic individuals, cardiac disease is the leading cause of fatal heart attacks and strokes. Physicians employ risk factors like age, smoking habits, hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol to identify patients at risk for an ischemic event and assess cardiovascular risk. This test measures the following cholesterol levels -

  1. Total cholesterol.
  2. HDL.
  3. LDL.
  4. Triglycerides.
  5. VLDL.
  6. LDL: Cholesterol ratio.
  7. HDL: Cholesterol ratio.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lipid profile test measures lipid in the blood to assess patients risk to an cardiovascular event. As per NLA-2014 guidelines, all adults above the age of 20 years should be screened for lipid status. Selective screening of children above the age of 2 years with a family history of premature cardiovascular disease or those with at least one parent with high total cholesterol is recommended

Lipid profile test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

Maintaining lipid levels within the desirable ranges helps lower risk of heart attacks and stoke.
Low HDL levels (below acceptable levels) are associated with increased risk for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) .
High levels of Non HDL Cholesterol (above acceptable levels) are associated with increased risk for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular disease (ASCVD)

A lipid profile may be requested by your doctor as a standard component of a physical examination. A variety of medical disorders may be prevented, monitored, or diagnosed using the findings of this test. It can also be used to assess the effectiveness of medication therapy, lipid-lowering lifestyle changes, or different types of treatments

For men between the ages of 45 and 65, and for women between the ages of 55 and 65, lipid profile testing should be performed every one to two years. For screening purposes, people over 65 should get a lipid panel test once a year.

Fasting samples must be taken following an overnight fast of at least 12 to 14 hours.

Typically, a complete blood count (CBC) and the basic metabolic panel (BMP), as well as a physical assessment, are also ordered along with a lipid profile test
