CCancer antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) is a protein. It is present in the blood. Pancreatic cancer cells exude an antigen called carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9. CA 19-9 might be a sign of certain malignancies or non-cancerous illnesses if it is present in high quantities. Additionally, it is also a tumour marker.
CA 19-9 tests are performed in conjunction with other forms of testing, such as imaging. This is done to identify the disease and track a patient's response to treatment. It also helps to spot the recurrence of disease following treatment, A blood test called the CA 19-9 Radioimmunoassay (RIA) is also done. It determines the blood level of CA 19-9.
