Frequently Asked Questions

Patients with Wilsons disease have low Ceruloplasmin levels.

This test is performed for patients suspected to be suffering from Wilsons disease.

Wilson's disease is a genetic disorder that prevents the body from removing extra copper, causing copper to build up in the liver, brain, eyes, and other organs. Wilson's disease can lead to high copper levels that cause life-threatening organ damage. Ceruloplasmin is an acute phase protein and a transport protein for copper. Serum ceruloplasmin levels are reduced in Wilson’s disease associated with increased urinary copper excretion and increased hepatic copper content. 15% of patients with Wilson’s disease may show normal ceruloplasmin levels.
