Thyroid Comprehensive Profile 2 Test

Thyroid profile test is mainly used to test the thyroid gland functioning. The most common scenarios where testing is carried out include:
- Cases of suspected hypothyroidism which may present as  fatigue, increased sensitivity to cold, constipation, dry skin, weight gain, muscle weakness, puffy face.
- Cases of suspected hyperthyroidism which may present as unintentional weight loss, rapid heart rate, arrhythmia, palpitation, increase appetite, nervousness, irritability. 
- For diagnosis of autoimmune thyroid disorders.

The profile includes thyroid profile test that measure the levels of FT3,FT4,TSH,and TPO in the blood.

• Free T4: This hormone helps regulate the body's metabolism.

• Free T3: This hormone helps regulate the body's metabolism.

• Thyroid Peroxidase: It can indicate the presence of autoimmune thyroid diseases such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

• TSH is a hormone made by the pituitary gland. It controls how much thyroid hormone is made.

Thyroid profile test requires a blood sample post exposure to the allergens. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

High TSH & high FT3 and FT4 : Thyroxine replacement therapy; pituitary adenoma; drugs like heparin, amiodarone, beta blockers, steroids; neonates; resistance to thyroid hormones

High TSH & low FT3 and FT4: Autoimmune thyroiditis, thyroidectomy, post-radiation, iodine deficiency, thyroid infiltrating tumour/ amyloid

Low TSH & Low FT3 and FT4: Central hypothyroidism, non-thyroidal illness

If the results of the Thyroid Comprehensive Profile-2 come back as Present or Absent, this could indicate an autoimmune thyroid disorder.

Low TSH & High FT3 and FT4: Grave's disease, toxic multinodular goitre, toxic adenoma, thyroiditis, drugs, hyperemesis gravidarum & hydatiform mole, congenital hyperthyroidism.

TPO: High values: suggestive of  Hashimoto thyroiditis; these antibodies can also be seen in Grave's disease.

To prepare for the Thyroid Comprehensive Profile-2, you should fast (no food or drink besides water) for 8–12 hours before the test.

Normal levels of thyroid hormones are expected during the Thyroid Comprehensive Profile-2. Low T3 and T4 may indicate hypothyroidism, and high levels may indicate hyperthyroidism.

Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder that leads to hyperthyroidism, an overactive thyroid gland. Symptoms include weight loss, anxiety, and tremors.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder that leads to hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid gland. Symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, and cold intolerance.

Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones. Symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, and cold intolerance.

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much hormone. Symptoms include weight loss, anxiety, tremors, and a rapid heartbeat.

• Experiencing thyroid disorder symptoms, such as fatigue, depression, weight gain, or hair loss?
• Having a family history of thyroid-related disorders or whose genetics put them at higher risk

The following is a list of frequently ordered tests in conjunction with the TCP-2.

• Free T4: This test measures the amount of free T4 in the blood. Free T4 is the active form of the hormone converted from T3. It helps to diagnose an overactive or underactive thyroid.

• Free T3: This test measures the amount of free T3 in the blood. Free T3 is the active form of the hormone. It plays a crucial role in controlling metabolism. It helps to diagnose an overactive or underactive thyroid.

• TSH: This test measures the amount of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the blood. The pituitary gland makes TSH. It tells the thyroid gland to make hormones. An abnormal level of TSH can indicate an overactive or underactive thyroid.
