Testosterone Total Serum Test

This test allows laboratory to detect total testosterone in patients. It is done for evaluation of men, women & children with testosterone level related diseases and disorder.

Test is recommended for evaluation of males with symptoms or signs of possible hypogonadism, such as loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, gynecomastia, osteoporosis, or infertility.

For evaluation of boys with delayed or precocious puberty. For evaluation of women with hirsutism, virilization, and oligomenorrhea, with symptoms or signs of possible testosterone deficiency.

Testosterone is the major androgenic hormone. It is responsible for the development of the male external genitalia and secondary sexual characteristics. In females, its main role is as an estrogen precursor. In both genders, it also exerts anabolic effects and influences behaviour.

Testosterone Free Test is designed to detect various hormonal problems such as  excess body hair growth and development of masculine features and irregular menstrual periods in women, infertility and decreased sex drive in men and women, erectile dysfunction and tumours of testicles in men, early or delayed puberty or virilization in boys or evaluation of infants with ambiguous genitalia.Useful test for primary and secondary hypogonadism ,delayed or precocious puberty. 

The test measures the levels of testosterone in the blood. 

The test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer. 

In men, high testosterone levels may mean a tumor in the testicles or adrenal glands and low testosterone levels indicate pituitary gland disease. 
In women, high testosterone levels may indicate cancer of the ovaries or adrenal glands or PCOS. High testosterone levels in women can also lead to male pattern baldness, deep voice and menstrual irregularities. High testosterone levels in women are linked to increased risk of uterine fibroids in women.
