Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) also known as venereal diseases are a group of viral and bacterial infections that are spread by sexual contact. The most mode is by sexual contact ie. Unprotected sex, or other forms of sexual contact. It may also be spread by other routes like sharing of needles, blood transfusions.  It can be passed from the mother to the foetus during pregnancy, childbirth or via breastmilk.

This test measures antibodies against Chlamydia Trachomatis, HIV and Syphilis infections

Depending on the underlying infections the symptoms may vary. However, the following are some common observed symptoms of STDs:

  • Unusual discharge from the vagina/penis
  • Sores or warts around the genital area
  • Itching and redness in the genital area
  • Presence of sores or blisters around the mouth
  • History of sexual intercourse with a STD patient
  • Pregnant women with STDs
  • The test may be done for patients with suspected signs of Sexually transmitted infections.
  • Patients with significant contact with patients suffering from STDs should also be investigated.
  • If during pregnancy it is proven that there has been exposure of foetus to these infections, then the test should be performed to confirm the same.
  • It may be done in certain immunocompromised patients with recent history of unprotected sexual contact, shared needle usage or history of blood transfusions.

This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer. Urine sample to be collected in a sterile container. For HPV test, tissue sample is to be collected with a sterilised swab.

HIV-2 RT Qualitative test

Detected result indicates the presence of HIV-2 virus in the specimen.

Not detected result indicates the absence of HIV-2 in the specimen.

All the results should be correlated with clinical status and history of the patient

HIV-1 RNA Test

Positive HIV-1 RNA result indicates a HIV-1 infection in the individual.

Not Detectable result indicates the absence of HIV-1 infection or lesser viral load in the specimen.

HPV DNA Detection test

A Not Detected result indicates the absence of HPV virus in the specimen.

Detected result indicates the presence of HPV virus in the specimen.

All the result should always be correlated by clinical status and history of the patient.

Chlamydia Trachomatis DNA test

A Positive result indicates a Chlamydia trachomatis infection in the individual.

A Negative result indicates the absence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in the individual.

The test is used for the molecular detection of HPV DNA and is currently the gold standard for identification of HPV infection. The test is useful for detecting the high risk as well as low risk types of HPV.

Chlamydia trachomatis is one of the most common sexually transmitted disease. It is a major cause of genital and urinary infection in men. It also causes pelvic inflammatory disease including cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. This is a nucleic acid detection based test; it detects DNA.
