Test Overview

PAP smear test performed for the detection of cervical cancer in women. It also detects early precencerous changes in the cells and hence with timely intervention progression to cancer can be prevented. The cells are collected from the cervix (lower end of vagina). Early detection helps in better diagnosis and prognosis. It is recommended between 25 years of age up to 65 years. As per (ACS/ASCCP/ASCP) tests should be done every 3 years. The frequency depends on the previous gynaecological history, risk factors and the tests undertaken.

Overview

A Pap smear is a screening test that helps in the diagnosis of cervical cancer. It is usually done during a pelvic examination. The doctor will use a speculum to open the vagina and visualise the cervix (the lower and narrow end of the uterus). A small brush or spatula is then used to collect cells from the surface or outer layer of the cervix. The cells are then placed on a slide and sent to a laboratory for analysis. Pap smear is effective in detecting and reducing the incidence of cervical cancer, which is estimated to reduce by up to 70%. The American Cancer Society recommends that women 21 to 65 years of age take a Pap smear test every 3 years.

What is Pap Smear Test?

A Papanicolaou smear, also called a Pap smear, is a method of cervical cancer screening. The test involves collecting cells from the cervix and examining them under a microscope, after staining the cells with PAP stain. Pap smears can detect abnormal cells that may become cancerous if left untreated.

Why is the Pap smear test by conventional method done?

  • The Pap smear can also be used to screen for other conditions of the cervix, such as infections and inflammation.
  • In some cases, the Pap smear may be done as part of a routine gynaecological examination, even if there are no symptoms present.
  • Pap smears can be used to screen for human papillomavirus (HPV), which is a risk factor for cervical cancer.

Reasons for Undergoing the PAP Smear Test in Rajkot

There are several compelling reasons to undergo a PAP smear test in Rajkot:

  • Cervical Cancer Screening: The primary purpose of the test is to screen for cervical cancer and detect any precancerous or cancerous changes in the cervical cells.
  • Routine Gynaecological Examination: The PAP smear test is often included as part of a routine gynaecological check-up, even in the absence of symptoms.
  • Detection of Cervical Conditions: The test can help identify other cervical conditions, such as infections and inflammation, which may require further evaluation and treatment.
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Screening: Although not directly tested, abnormal PAP smear results may indicate the presence of HPV, a known risk factor for cervical cancer.

Monitoring High-Risk Individuals: Women with a history of cervical cancer, early-stage cervical cancer, HIV infection, a family history of cervical cancer, or autoimmune disorders may require more frequent PAP smear testing for close monitoring.

List of Parameters Considered During the PAP Smear Test in Rajkot

The PAP smear test evaluates cervical cells for abnormalities. Normal cells suggest a healthy cervix, while abnormal cells may indicate precancerous or cancerous changes. Inflammatory cells can signal infection or inflammation. Although not directly detecting HPV, abnormal results may prompt HPV testing due to its link to cervical cancer.

PAP Smear Test Preparation

To prepare for a PAP smear test, avoid sexual intercourse, douching, tampons, or vaginal medicines for 48 hours before the test. Empty your bladder before the procedure and ensure no lubricants or glove powder interfere with the specimen collection for accurate results and a smooth process.

PAP Smear Test Results & Interpretation

The results of a PAP smear test in Rajkot can be categorised as follows:

  • Normal (Negative): A normal or negative result indicates that no abnormal cells were detected on the cervix, suggesting a healthy cervical condition.
  • Abnormal: An abnormal result warrants further testing to determine the nature and severity of the abnormality. Abnormal results can be further classified into:
    • Mild Abnormalities: These may indicate the presence of infections or minor cellular changes that have the potential to regress spontaneously without intervention.

Moderate to Severe Abnormalities: These findings suggest a higher risk of cancer progression and require prompt and appropriate intervention to prevent the development of cervical cancer.
