PLA2 Receptor Antibody Qualitative, serum Test

Test is done to diagnose patients suffering from idiopathic membranous nephropathy.

This test is done to detect an autoantibody in your blood against glomeruli.

Idiopathic membranous nephropathy is an autoimmune disease wherein antibodies target glomeruli thus leading to progressive reduction in kidney function. It is both a diagnostic and a prognostic test (helps check improvement after treatment).

• PLA2 Receptor Antibody Qualitative test detects autoantibodies against phospholipase A2 receptors (PLA2R) which is useful in the diagnosis of primary membranous glomerulonephritis (PMN).

• The PLA2R (Phospholipase A2 receptor) antibody qualitative test is typically done in individuals who have signs and symptoms of kidney disease such as proteinuria, decreased kidney function, or kidney failure. This test may also be done in patients with unexplained hypertension, as primary membranous nephropathy can be a cause of hypertension.
• Additionally, the test may be done in patients with other autoimmune diseases, as primary membranous nephropathy is often associated with other autoimmune diseases.
• It is usually recommended that the test is done in patients who have persistent proteinuria, even after exclusion of other causes such as kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and other kidney diseases.

PLA2 Receptor Antibody Qualitative test qualitatively detects the presence of autoantibodies against phospholipase A2 receptors (PLA2R).

This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer

If the PLA2R (Phospholipase A2 receptor) antibody qualitative test is positive, it may indicate the presence of primary membranous nephropathy (PMN). A positive test result suggests that the patient has antibodies directed against the PLA2R protein.

Primary membranous nephropathy (PMN) is a type of kidney disease characterized by the formation of antibodies that attack the PLA2R (Phospholipase A2 receptor) protein on the cells in the glomeruli of the kidney, leading to inflammation and damage to the glomeruli.
