This test is used in the diagnosis of autoimmune encephalitis. NMDA encephalitis is usually diagnosed clinically and the test is often done for confirmation. Symptoms include behavioural disorders (paranoia, hallucination, aggression), memory loss, speech disorder, loss of consciousness, seizures. This may be a result of existing ovarian or testicular teratoma (paraneoplastic syndrome, PNS).
This test detects antibodies against glutamate receptor type NMDA-NR1 in the cerebrospinal fluid [CSF].
This test requires a CSF sample. A spinal needle is used and the patient's CSF sample is collected with the necessary aseptic precautions.
If the NMDA Receptor Antibody (NR1) is detected, it may indicate autoimmune NMDA encephalitis. If the test is negative, it does not rule out other forms of autoimmune encephalitis. The results should be correlated with the clinical findings.
