This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.
No special precautions are required.
Based on the presence or absence of autoantibodies against each of the antigen (Positive or Negative Result) along with the intensity and class of each antibody, the overall result can be determined.
The overall result is given as Negative, Borderline, Positive and Strongly positive.
This helps in diagnosis and further classification of Myositis into further subtypes like Polymyositis, Necrotising Myositis, Overlap Myositis among others.
Some antibodies may also be detected in certain types of neoplasms as well as some autoimmune conditions like ILD.
Hence, further correlation with clinical presentation and other tests may be required for further diagnosis.
