HCG Test Overview

Beta Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (β hCG) is a hormone that is produced by the placenta during pregnancy. The test can be positive by the 10th day of pregnancy. β hCG levels can be correlated with weeks of gestation and thus can help identify pathologic pregnancy & miscarriages. HCG test can be used to identify ectopic pregnancy, trophoblastic diseases and variety of cancers including choriocarcinoma and extra-uterine malignancies.

hCG Beta subunit test is a simple blood test that measures the level of human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) hormone or the pregnancy hormone in the blood. As opposed to an hCG pregnancy test where the presence of the hCG hormone in the urine is measured, the hCG beta subunit serum test is a quantitative test where the amount or concentration of the hormone in the blood is measured. The level of this hormone helps the doctor in assessing the health of the pregnancy and drafting preventive measures in case of a high-risk pregnancy. Some of the reasons for a positive hCG urine test are choriocarcinoma (a type of cancer), chronic kidney disease, issues associated with the ovaries and other medical conditions.

During the early weeks of pregnancy, HCG plays an important role in maintaining the function of Corpus Luteum. The Corpus Luteum secretes the hormone progesterone and is important for a healthy pregnancy. HCG production goes up steadily in the first trimester in a normal pregnancy. The levels of HGC peak at around the 10th week of a pregnancy, calculated from the Last Menstrual Cycle. HCG levels then continue to fall down throughout the pregnancy and returns to negligible amounts after childbirth. Abnormal HCG levels are seen if there is a chromosomal defect like down syndrome.
