Frequently Asked Questions
Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) Panel detects abnormalities in 5qDel, 7qDel, 20qDel. Trisomy 8 using FISH.
- This test may be done in patients suspected of having myelodysplastic syndrome.
- MDS is done in cases where abnormalities are detected in the routine blood examination along with other tests.
- The panel is advised for the appropriate diagnosis, to decide the correct line of treatment and to monitor the disease progression in diagnosed patients.
MDS may often be difficult to diagnose initially due to the clinic presentation often mimicking leukaemia’s, anaplastic anaemias, other blood disorders. People with the following signs should be advised to undergo further testing:
- Paleness, easy fatigability, tiredness with signs of anaemia
- Susceptibility to frequent infections
- Easy bleeding or bruising
- General weakness or loss of weight
This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.
Medical history / Heamato-pathological reports are required.
Positive or abnormal results show rearrangements or mutations in 5qDel, 7qDel, 20qDel, Trisomy 8 genes.
Further correlation with clinical findings, bone marrow studies and cytogenetics studies should also be done.
