Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a term used for two conditions ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease that results in inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. If left untreated it may damage the GI tract. IBD Profile is series of tests to detect the presence or absence of certain smooth muscle antibodies in the blood and stool which may cause IBD. This test is useful in the diagnosis of Inflammatory Bowel diseases and can help to distinguish patients with ulcerative colitis from those with Crohn’s Disease.

Frequently Asked Questions
The IBD profile measures the ANCA, ASCA-IgG & IgA antibody levels in the blood and the calprotectin levels in the stool sample.
- To diagnose ulcerative colitis
- To diagnose Crohn’s disease
- To detect the underlying factor causing gastrointestinal inflammation
- Also in certain cases of GI infections and colorectal cancer.
People with the following symptoms:
- Recurrent symptoms of diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting.
- Abdominal cramps or severe persistent pain.
- Blood in stools
- Patients with Irritable bowel syndrome
- Patients with diagnosed IBD experiencing a relapse of symptoms.
This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer. The patient is instructed to collect the stool sample in a sterile container for fecal calprotectin test.
Anti neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)
Presence or absence of ANCA antibodies are used to diagnose and monitor inflammatory activity in the primary systemic small vessel vasculatures.
Positive p-ANCA antibodies may be seen in cases of ulcerative colitis. In these cases, there is no associated vasculitis and the ANCA are thought to be incidental rather than part of the disease itself. p-ANCA may be elevated in certain other conditions like autoimmune hepatitis also.
ASCA-IgA Test
A positive ASCA test with negative perinuclear anti-neutrophilic cytoplasmic antibody (p-ANCA) is strongly associated with CD. Other diseases having ASCA positive are Celiac disease, Behcet`s disease & Microscopic or Collagenous colitis.
ASCA-IgG Test
A positive ASCA test with negative perinuclear anti-neutrophilic cytoplasmic antibody (p-ANCA) is strongly associated with CD. Other diseases having ASCA positive are Celiac disease, Behcet`s disease & Microscopic or Collagenous colitis.
Calprotectin Stool Test
Elevations can be caused by IBD, infection, polyps, neoplasia or NSAID usage. Faecal calprotectin concentrations relate well to disease activity in the inflammatory bowel diseases and can therefore be used to monitor therapy
- IBD test
- ANCA test
- ASCA IgG test
- ASCA IgA test
- Calprotectin test
ANCAs are autoantibodies that attack the healthy neutrophils [WBC] which further leads to damage of blood vessels (autoimmune vasculitis) resulting in inflammation and swelling of the blood vessels. This test detects antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) in your blood. There are two main types of ANCA that may be found; p-ANCA and c-ANCA.
SACCHAROMYCES CEREVISIAE is a yeast commonly used in the food industry. Antibodies against this yeast (ASCA) are found in most cases of Crohn`s disease (CD) & rarely in Ulcerative colitis (UC). ASCA are considered specific for CD and useful in differentiating CD from ulcerative colitis (UC) in both adult and paediatric populations.
Calprotectin is a calcium-binding protein secreted predominantly by neutrophils and monocytes. Fecal calprotectin is a direct measure of inflammation in the gut and is directly correlates to disease activity in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Fecal Calprotectin is a highly specific marker to distinguish between irritable bowel syndrome and Inflammatory bowel disease.
