Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated enteropathy induced by dietary gluten.
When a genetically predisposed individual consumes food containing gluten like wheat, barley, rye, and other grains ,inflammation and damage of the small bowel mucosa occurs which leads to malabsorption , loss of bone density, miscarriage, infertility or even neurological diseases or certain cancers. Gliadin IGA test is a non invasive , quantitative determination of IgA antibodies against deamidated gliadin protein epitopes (DGP) in human serum or plasma.
Gliadin-IgA Antibodies Deamidated (DGP) Serum is an ELISA test used to measure the amount of IgA antibodies against deamidated gliadin peptide epitopes (DGP) in the serum. This test is used to diagnose celiac disease in patients who are negative for anti-tTG (Anti-Tissue-Transglutaminase IgG), especially children younger than 2 years old. Elevated Gliadin-IgA antibodies indicate celiac disease. The IgA antibodies make it possible to determine the level of disease activity and monitor adherence to a gluten-free diet.
What is Celiac Disease?
Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated enteropathy induced by dietary gluten. It occurs when the body's immune system reacts to gluten, a protein found in rye, barley, and wheat. When an individual with celiac disease consumes gluten, their immune system responds by damaging the small intestine. Hence, the small intestine is unable to absorb nutrients, causing malnutrition and other health complications.

Frequently Asked Questions
Gliadin Iga test is done in patients showing symptoms of malabsorption and celiac disease. It detects Gliadin-IgA Antibodies de-amidated (dGP) in serum.
Gliadin IgA is preferred in case child is less than 2 years when tTG IgA results are equivocal
Diagnosis of celiac disease.
• Monitor the effectiveness of therapy and a gluten-free diet in individuals diagnosed with celiac disease.
• Rule out gluten sensitivity in people with celiac disease symptoms but who don't have celiac disease based on other tests.
• A follow-up test after a positive IgA-tTG (tissue transglutaminase) or IgA-EMA (endomysial antibodies) test, which are more specific but less sensitive tests for celiac disease.
• To exclude other conditions that may cause symptoms similar to celiac disease. They include non-celiac gluten sensitivity, inflammatory bowel disease, and other malabsorption syndromes.
A Gliadin-IgA Antibodies De-Amidated (DGP) Serum Test is usually advised for the following people:
• Diagnosed with celiac disease or have a family history of celiac disease.
• Symptoms of celiac disease such as abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, or weight loss.
• Gluten exposure and gluten intolerance symptoms.
• Have an autoimmune disorder and are at high risk of developing celiac disease.
• A positive IgA-tTG antibody test result
• A positive IgG-DGP antibody test result
Quantitative assessment of Gliadin-IgA Antibodies de-amidated (dGP) in serum. The IgA antibodies make it possible to determine the level of disease activity and to monitor adherence to a gluten-free diet.
Gliadin IGA test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.
Gliadin-IgA Antibodies de-amidated (dGP) in serum is increased (>25RU/mL) in people with Celiac disease who have an extreme allergy to food containing gluten. It also helps in monitoring the effect of therapy and gluten free diet and can be done as a substitute to invasive biopsy procedures.
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder affecting the small intestine. It occurs when the body's immune system reacts to gluten, a protein found in barley, wheat, and rye. This damages the small intestines causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, Diarrhoea, Constipation, and Anaemia.
The Gliadin-IgA Antibodies De-Amidated (DGP) Serum Test measures the amount of gliadin-specific IgA antibodies in the blood. The IgA-tTG test measures the amount of IgA antibodies specific for tissue transglutaminase, an enzyme found in the small intestines. Both tests are used to diagnose celiac disease, but the DGP test is considered more sensitive, while the tTG test is considered more specific.
The normal test result is negative. Gliadin-IgA Antibodies de-amidated (dGP) in serum are increased (>25RU/mL) in people with Celiac disease who have an extreme allergy to foods containing gluten. If you are at low risk for celiac disease and the test comes back negative, it is likely that you don't have it. If you have a negative result but are at high risk for celiac disease, your doctor will interpret the result based on your symptoms and medical history. If your test comes back positive, you likely have celiac disease. Your doctor may perform a biopsy of your small intestine to confirm the diagnosis.
- Is the Gliadin-IgA Antibodies De-Amidated (DGP) Serum Test painful?
The Gliadin-IgA Antibodies De-Amidated (DGP) Serum Test is a blood test that requires a small blood sample from an arm vein. Some people may feel a little pain or stinging when the needle is inserted, but the procedure is usually painless.
Celiac disease is a chronic, incurable disease. However, adhering to a strict gluten-free diet can help prevent small intestine damage, alleviate symptoms, and prevent complications.
