Overview

Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 (FG23) is produced by the osteoclasts and osteoblasts in the bone, and its main function is to regulate the levels of phosphorus and vitamin D in the body. FG23 levels are found to progressively increase in cases of chronic kidney disease (CKD) as an indirect response to maintain the phosphate metabolism. Fibroblast Growth Factor 23, Plasma is a test used to monitor the FG23 levels in the body and thus is an important test for CKD patients. Written by: Dr. Shibani R, Medical Writer, Medical Affairs

Frequently Asked Questions

The test measures the Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 levels in the blood plasma.

• FG23 test is done to monitor the progression of chronic kidney disease by monitoring the renal clearance status. • The test aids the diagnosis of hereditary hypophosphatemic rickets and diagnosis and follow-up of tumor-induced osteomalacia.

• CKD patients at risk for altered phosphorus metabolism due to malfunctioning of the kidneys. • Patients with bone disorders like hereditary rickets which may affect the phosphorus and vitamin D metabolism. • The test may also be advised for patients with certain types of bone tumors.

The test requires a blood plasma sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

Elevated levels are associated with increased adverse outcome and is a predictor of mortality in CKD. Increased levels are seen in Autosomal Dominant Hypophosphatemic Rickets, X-linked Hypophosphatemia Rickets, Fibrous Dysplasia and tumor induced osteomalacia.
