Copper (Serum)

This test measures the concentration of copper in your blood to assess your copper levels and diagnose conditions related to copper metabolism.

• To diagnose and monitor conditions related to copper metabolism, such as Wilson's disease or Menkes disease
• To assess nutritional deficiencies or excess copper levels
• To monitor the effectiveness of treatment for copper-related conditions
• To evaluate liver function and overall health
• To determine the cause of certain symptoms like anaemia or neurological abnormalities

This test may be recommended if you:

• Have symptoms or a family history of Wilson's disease or Menkes disease
• Show signs of copper deficiency or excess
• Are undergoing treatment for a copper-related condition
• Need to assess liver function or overall health
• Experience unexplained anaemia or neurological abnormalities

High copper levels may indicate Wilson's disease, chronic liver disease, certain cancers, or excess copper intake. Low copper levels may suggest malnutrition, malabsorption, zinc toxicity, or Menkes disease. Discuss your results with your doctor for proper interpretation in the context of your medical history and additional tests if needed.

• Blood will be drawn from a vein in your arm.
• The procedure is relatively quick and involves minimal discomfort.
• After collection, the sample will be sent to the laboratory for analysis.

• You may need to fast for at least 8 hours before the test.
• Inform your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking as they can affect the test results.
• Follow any other specific instructions provided by your doctor.

• Liver Function Tests: These tests evaluate liver health and may include measurements such as albumin, bilirubin, and liver enzymes.
• Ceruloplasmin Test: This blood test measures the level of ceruloplasmin, a protein that carries copper in the blood.
• 24-Hour Urine Copper Test: This test measures the amount of copper excreted in the urine over a 24-hour period.

Serum Copper or Copper Blood Test

Wilson's disease is a rare genetic disorder that leads to an abnormal accumulation of copper in the body, particularly in the liver and brain. It can cause liver damage, neurological symptoms, and other complications if left untreated.
