Cobalt Urine Spot Test

The Cobalt Urine Spot Test measures the levels of cobalt present in your urine sample.

It is primarily used in the following scenarios:

• To diagnose exposure to cobalt-containing metals or minerals,
• Monitoring of cobalt levels after treatment for cobalt toxicity.

Cobalt Urine Spot Test results are usually reported in micrograms per litre (mcg/L). Abnormal results, with elevated levels of cobalt in urine samples, might indicate possible cobalt toxicity or exposure to high levels of cobalt through various sources.

The Cobalt Urine Spot Test involves collecting a urine sample in a special container provided by the lab. You may need to provide an 'on-the-spot' urine sample.

• Inform your doctor if you are taking any medications that could interfere with test results or have any other specific requirements.
• Avoid consuming cobalt-rich foods such as seafood, nuts, and cocoa products for 48 hours before the test.
• Drink plenty of fluids before the test to ensure adequate urine production.
• It is advisable to consult your healthcare provider to determine if there are any particular requirements you should be aware of.

• Complete Blood Count (CBC) to detect possible anaemia related to cobalt toxicity,
• Chest X-ray or CT (computerised tomography) scan to assess respiratory damage, and
• Electrocardiogram (ECG) to check heart damage.
