The liver is the second largest organ after the skin. It lies in the right upper abdomen below the right lung. The main two functions of the liver include - detoxification of your body and digestion of the food you consume. Liver function tests (LFT) are done to detect liver disease and assess improvement with treatment. It measures enzymes, and proteins produced by the liver and also assesses its ability to clear bilirubin. This test helps doctors understand the extent of liver disease, liver damage, and associated disorders.
The Liver Function Maxi test measures the following parameters:
- Bilirubin (Direct): It is a liver enzyme marker. This red-orange colour pigment undergoes chemical changes in the liver. It gets transferred to the intestines to be removed through the stools.
- Bilirubin (Total): This test measures the total amount of Bilirubin in the blood. It measures both Direct Bilirubin and Indirect Bilirubin. Indirect Bilirubin comes from the breakdown of red blood cells. It travels in the blood to the liver.
- AST: Aspartate transaminase, formerly known as SGOT, or Serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase, is one of the two liver enzymes.
- ALT: Alanine transaminase, formerly known as SGPT, or Serum glutamic-pyruvate transaminase, is one of the two liver enzymes.
- Total Proteins: Proteins make up the skeleton of the whole body. The two kinds of proteins in the body are Albumin and Globulin.
- Albumin: It is a protein made in the liver. It checks the condition of your liver and kidneys.
- ALP: Alkaline phosphatase is an enzyme in the blood. It helps in protein breakdown.

Nausea, Vomiting, diarrhoea may also warrant a liver function test.
The liver is the organ that removes all toxic substances from your blood. When you take medicines, it is the liver that helps you detoxify the substances. The liver is unique because it can regenerate itself. Even when a part of liver is damaged, it can regenerate itself from healthy cells. Alcohol and abuse of drugs puts a strain on the liver cells and can cause irreversible damage. Hepatitis primarily affects the liver cells. The liver also produces proteins, enzymes, store vitamins, produces blood clotting factors and helps maintain hormones. The liver also produces bile which helps in digesting fats.
