Overview

Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated enteropathy induced by dietary gluten causing inflammation of the small intestines that may lead to various gastrointestinal symptoms.

When a genetically predisposed individual consumes food containing gluten like wheat, barley, rye, and other grains, inflammation and damage of the small bowel mucosa occurs which leads to malabsorption, loss of bone density, miscarriage, infertility or even neurological diseases or certain cancers.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Celiac disease profile measures the endomysial Antibody, tTg antibody, gliadin antibodies levels in the blood.

  • For diagnosing Coeliac disease, an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine.

People with the following symptoms:

  • Recurrent symptoms of diarrhoea with or without blood, constipation, nausea, vomiting, bloating on consumption of gluten or gluten induced food items.
  • Symptoms of gluten induced malabsorption, loss of bone density, infertility, neurological symptoms or even cancers.

This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

Endomysial Antibody IgA

Presence of antibodies (Positive result) may be seen in gluten sensitive enteropathy (children: celiac disease, adult: non tropical sprue). Antibodies against endomysium and gliadin are rarely seen in healthy individuals and in other intestinal diseases.

tTG (Tissue Transglutaminase) IgA

tTG activity is increased (Positive Result) in the jejunal mucosa in Celiac disease/Gluten sensitive enteropathy, which is a chronic condition affecting genetically susceptible individuals.

Results should be correlated with the clinical features and with the other test results as well.

Gliadin-IgA Antibodies Serum Test

Gliadin-IgA Antibodies de-amidated (dGP) in serum is increased in people with Celiac disease who have an extreme allergy to food containing gluten. It also helps in monitoring the effect of therapy and gluten free diet and can be done as a substitute to invasive biopsy procedures. High anti- gliadin titres may be found in other gastrointestinal diseases such as Crohn`s disease, ulcerative colitis and esophagitis.

Low levels of anti- gliadin antibodies have been found in several cases of celiac disease due to a selective IgA deficiency. Values should be interpreted in conjunction with associated tests

Gliadin-IgG Antibodies Serum

Gliadin-IgG Antibodies de-amidated (dGP) in serum is increased in people with Celiac disease who have an extreme allergy to food containing gluten. It also helps in monitoring the effect of therapy and gluten free diet and can be done as a substitute to invasive biopsy procedures. High anti- gliadin titres may be found in other gastrointestinal diseases such as Crohn`s disease, ulcerative colitis and esophagitis.

  • Endomysial Antibody test
  • Gliadin antibody test.
  • tTG (Tissue Transglutaminase) Test
  • IgA test.
  • Ig G test

Antibodies against endomysium of class IgA can be found in gluten sensitive enteropathy [in children and adults].

tTG is a calcium-dependent enzyme widely distributed in body fluids and tissues especially the gastrointestinal submucosa. The test is used for the detection of autoantibodies of IgA class directed against tissue transglutaminase (tTG) in human serum or plasma.

This test is a non- invasive, quantitative determination of IgA antibodies against deamidated gliadin protein epitopes (DGP) in human serum or plasma. This test is done in patients showing symptoms of malabsorption and celiac disease.

This test is done in patients showing symptoms of malabsorption and celiac disease. It detects Gliadin-IgG Antibodies de-amidated (dGP) in serum. Gliadin IgG is preferred in case child is less than 2 years, people with IgA deficiency & when tTG IgA results are equivocal.
