Parathyroid hormone (PTH), specifically measured as the "PTH-Intact Molecule," is a protein hormone produced by your parathyroid glands. These glands sit in your neck and play a critical role in regulating calcium levels in your blood. The PTH-Intact Molecule test measures the complete, functional form of PTH circulating in your bloodstream. Doctors order this test to diagnose parathyroid disorders, particularly those affecting how much PTH your body produces. By analyzing PTH levels, they can investigate abnormal calcium levels, potentially caused by conditions like hyperparathyroidism (too much PTH) or hypoparathyroidism (too little PTH). This helps determine the underlying cause of symptoms like bone problems, fatigue, and kidney stones.

Frequently Asked Questions
To determine the source for calcium level disturbance and imbalance; to guage parathyroid function; to diagnose and differentiate between primary, secondary, and tertiary hyperparathyroidism; to diagnose hypoparathyroidism; during surgery for hyperparathyroidism to verify removal of the gland(s) causing the concern.
Your body needs to have adequate levels of calcium to be able to function properly. Your physician might suggest you do the PTH test when:
- You show symptoms of high calcium in blood like weakness, nausea, frequent thirst and pain in the abdomen
- You show symptoms of low calcium like tingling of fingers, muscle cramps.
Calcium is vitally important for carrying out various body functions and maintaining a normal calcium level in blood is highly important, however, several chemicals in our body influence the calcium levels in the blood. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) helps regulation of calcium in the body and maintains high calcium levels in the blood, so that blood calcium remains normal. It is part of a collective system of several chemicals such as calcium, PTH, vitamin D, and, to some extent, phosphorus (phosphate) and magnesium that work together to regulate calcium levels in blood- known as a feedback loop. Conditions and diseases that cause interruption in normal working of this feedback loop can cause inappropriate elevations or decreases in calcium and PTH levels and lead to symptoms of hypercalcemia (high calcium in blood) or hypocalcemia (low calcium levels in blood), respectively. This test measures the amount of PTH in the blood.
