Test Overview

FSH-LH-Prolactin Serum test is a blood test to measure hormonal levels of FSH (Follicle stimulating hormone), LH (Luteinizing hormone) and Prolactin in blood. All these three hormones are produced by the pituitary gland and are responsible for reproduction and sexual functions in males and females.
FSH and LH are present both in men and women. In women it controls the menstrual cycle and stimulates the production of eggs(ovulation). In men it stimulates the production of sperm. It is present in low levels in children until puberty, post which the FSH levels increase to stimulate the production of oestrogen and testosterone.
Prolactin acts primarily on the mammary glands and its principal action involve - proliferation of mammary glands ; initiation of milk secretion . The levels of this hormone rises in pregnancy and during lactation.

Overview

The FSH-LH-Prolactin Serum test is used to measure the amounts of certain hormones in the blood. FSH stands for Follicle Stimulating Hormone, and LH for Luteinising Hormone. FSH in women is especially active during the first two weeks of the period cycle as it makes the ovaries produce increased amounts of estrogen and some progesterone. FSH maintains normal sperm production in men. LH has similar roles in the fertility function in both men and women. Prolactin helps in milk production in women after childbirth. A trace amount of prolactin is also present in men.

All of these hormones are secreted by the pituitary gland in the brain. The hormones FSH and LH are present in both men and women. In women, it helps maintain the menstrual cycle and plays a role in ovulation. In men, FSH helps in maintaining normal sperm production. These hormones are present in low levels in children till they hit puberty.

Prolactin is present in women and it stimulates milk production from the mammary glands. Prolactin levels increase especially during pregnancy and lactation.
