Antenatal period or gestation period (pregnancy) involves various physiological changes in the body. Antenatal Profile includes a series of routine blood and urine tests to check for any abnormalities, infections that may endanger the pregnancy and foetal health. These tests are important for a healthy and safe pregnancy.
The ANC profile test, also known as the antenatal profile test, is a comprehensive medical examination conducted during pregnancy to assess the health and well-being of both the expectant mother and her unborn baby. This test includes a combination of blood and urine tests, along with other evaluations such as blood pressure monitoring, urine analysis, and ultrasound scans to monitor foetal growth and detect any potential complications early on.

Reasons for Undergoing the ANC Profile Test
There are several important reasons why your doctor may recommend an ANC profile test during your pregnancy:
- Identifying and managing pre-existing health conditions or risk factors that could affect the mother or baby, such as hypertension, diabetes, or thyroid disorders.
- Screening for infectious diseases, including HIV, hepatitis B, and syphilis, to ensure timely treatment and reduce risks to the baby.
- Detecting conditions like anaemia, gestational diabetes, or other metabolic disorders, which are common in pregnancy and may require intervention.
- Assessing the overall health of the mother and foetus by monitoring key markers, enabling early detection and management of abnormalities or complications.
- Recommended particularly for women in the first trimester or those at high risk due to factors like a history of infections, thyroid disease, or diabetes mellitus during pregnancy, ensuring a safer pregnancy journey for both mother and baby.
List of Parameters Considered During the ANC Profile Test
The ANC profile test list parameters include:
- CBC: Detects anaemia, infections, and clotting disorders
- Blood Group & Rh Factor: Identifies potential haemolytic diseases
- Blood Sugar Test: Screens for gestational diabetes
- Urinalysis: Checks for infections and kidney health
- HIV, Hepatitis B, and Syphilis Tests: Screens for infections affecting pregnancy
- Haemoglobin Electrophoresis: Detects abnormal haemoglobin types
- TSH: Evaluates thyroid function
- Liver/Kidney Function Tests: Monitors maternal health
- Ultrasound: Tracks foetal growth and development
ANC Profile Test Preparation
Preparing for your ANC profile test is relatively simple, but there are a few important steps to keep in mind:
- You may need to fast for 8-12 hours before the test.
- Inform your doctor about any medications you are currently taking.
- Duly filled consent forms are required for tests like HIV
ANC Profile Test Results & Interpretation
The results of the ANC profile test depend on the individual tests included and have specific normal ranges and interpretations:
- CBC: Normal ranges vary, but for example, hemoglobin levels in pregnant women should typically be between 11 and 14 grams per decilitre (g/dL)
- Blood Sugar: Normal fasting glucose levels are generally below 95 mg/dL, and postprandial levels should be below 140 mg/dL
- Urinalysis: Normal results indicate no significant signs of infection or other abnormalities
- Infectious Disease Tests: Negative results indicate no infection; positive results require further evaluation and management
Other Tests: Each test has its own normal range and interpretation, which will be provided in the detailed report from the laboratory

Frequently Asked Questions
- Helps to know the maternal blood group
- To detect any abnormalities in blood parameters
- To rule out any sexually transmitted diseases or infections
- For diagnosis of diabetes mellitus and thyroid dysfunctions.
Antenatal Profile-I is a routine screening test to measure the CBC, Blood Group, TSH, VDRL, HBsAg, HIV-DUO, Anti HCV, Abnormal Hb Studies, FBS, PPBS in blood serum and also routine urine examination.
- These tests are recommended to be done by pregnant women as part of routine screening to prevent the risk of congenital infections in the foetus.
- In case of high risk pregnancies, other specialized tests may also be done apart from the routine screening.
- Pregnant women with family history of certain blood disorders and congenital conditions may be required to undergo some additional tests apart from routine screening.
This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer. The urine sample is also instructed to be collected in a sterile container for urine examination.
8 to 10 hours fasting required, only plain water to be consumed in fasting period.
CBC test
Low hemoglobin levels may indicate anemia, which requires further testing and treatment.
Presence of glucose in urine may indicate diabetes mellitus and further confirmatory tests.
Presence of High pus cell count may indicate urine infection requiring further treatment.
FBS and PPBS
Elevated levels of blood glucose levels indicate diabetes mellitus (gestational diabetes).
Gestational diabetes is a common condition especially in high risk pregnancies.
TSH(Ultrasensitive)
TSH levels are prone to physiologic, seasonal and diurnal variation. Abnormal levels (any increase or decrease) should be further investigated.
Blood Group and Rh Typing.
The blood group and Rh positivity status helps to confirm the blood group of the pregnant woman.
HBsAg Screening
Non-reactive result indicates the absence of Hepatitis infection.
All Reactive results must be confirmed by further testing.
HIV-DUO
HIV-DUO is a screening test. Positive result indicates HIV infection and requires further tests to confirm the result.
VDRL- RPR Serum
Rising titres are found in active disease and levels subside after successful treatment.
Positive test should be confirmed by further testing.
Reactive titre is often associated with biological false positives which may occur during pregnancy.
Anti HCV-Ab to Hepatitis C Virus
Positive result indicates the presence of Hepatitis C viral infection. Further tests like RNA PCR may be required to further differentiate past(resolved) and chronic infections.
Abnormal Haemoglobin Studies
Mild to moderate increase in foetal haemoglobin can be seen in some acquired conditions like Pregnancy.
Based on the levels of HbF, HbA0 and HbA2, diagnosis of sickle cell anemia, Beta Thalassemia, and other blood disorders can be made.
In case of haemoglobinopathy, DNA Analysis and Genetic counselling is advised.

- Abnormal Hemoglobin tests
The fasting blood glucose test measures the glucose or sugar levels in blood post 10-12 hours of fasting period. These levels are measured to know the risk of diabetes during pregnancy.
The PPBS test measures the blood sugar levels post 2 hours of meals. These levels are measured for diagnosis of diabetes during pregnancy.
TSH is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland and is responsible for the production of T3 and T4 hormones. Thyroid hormones have an impact on the physiological bodily functions. During gestation period thyroid levels can have an impact on the maternal and foetal health.
- Complete blood count (CBC) evaluates cells circulating in blood i.e., haemoglobin levels, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets which determine general state of heath of an individual. Low haemoglobin levels are often seen during pregnancy which may lead to anaemia.
- If any abnormality is detected, further tests are recommended.
The blood group test is important to know the blood group of the pregnant woman. The Rh positivity status is important to avoid of Rh incompatibility reactions during childbirth.
Routine urine test is done to detect the presence or absence of any abnormalities in urine that may impact the maternal and foetal health. Urine routine and microscopy is a screening test. Abnormal results may require further tests.
HbsAg test is done to detect the presence or absence of Hepatitis B infection during antenatal period.
HIV-DUO Test is a Screening test for detection of antibodies to HIV type 1 and/or 2 antigens in human serum or plasma.
Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) is done to screen presence of Syphilis in people with high risk of contracting infection & as a part of screening panel for all pregnant women (to prevent congenital infections).
RPR helps in monitoring progression of disease and also to assess response to treatment.
This is a screening test detecting anti-HCV antibody which is useful for diagnosis of Hepatitis C Viral infection.
Abnormal Haemoglobin Studies measures the various components of haemoglobin like foetal haemoglobin (HbF), Haemoglobin (Hb A0) and Haemoglobin (HbA2) and helps to detect blood disorders like Beta thalassaemia and various hemoglobinopathies. It's most often used to help diagnose anaemia, sickle cell disease, and other haemoglobin related blood disorders.
Before getting tested for the ANC profile test, inform your doctor about any medications you are taking. Duly filled consent forms may be required for certain tests, such as HIV.
The ANC profile test list includes complete blood count (CBC), blood grouping and Rh factor, blood sugar test, urinalysis, HIV test, hepatitis B test, syphilis test (VDRL), haemoglobin electrophoresis (HPLC), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), liver and kidney function tests, and ultrasound scans.
Blood samples are collected through a simple venipuncture, while urine samples are provided by the patient. Ultrasound scans are performed to monitor foetal growth and development.
The ANC profile test should be done during the first trimester of pregnancy, ideally between 8 to 12 weeks of gestation.
The ANC profile test results are not classified as positive or negative. Instead, each parameter has its own normal range, and any deviations from these ranges may indicate the presence of certain health conditions or risks.
The ANC profile test itself takes only a few minutes for blood and urine sample collection.
The results for the ANC profile test are typically available within 72 hours, depending on the day and time the sample was collected and processed. The diagnostic center or healthcare provider will provide the exact timeline.
