A diabetes type 1 profile is a group of tests that are used to diagnose and monitor type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin, a hormone that regulates the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood. The test can include the following:
- C-peptide: This test measures the amount of C-peptide, a protein that is produced along with insulin. Low levels of C-peptide can indicate a lack of insulin production, which is common in type 1 diabetes.
- Glutamic acid decarboxylase antibody (GAD), IA2 (Insulinoma-associated antigen 2), Insulin antibody total and Islet cell antibody (ICA) tests: These tests detect the presence of antibodies in the blood that are associated with type 1 diabetes.
- Insulin fasting: This test measures the level of insulin in the blood after an overnight fast. In people with type 1 diabetes, the pancreas is not producing enough insulin, so the levels of insulin in the blood will be low.
