Lifestyle choices

Excessive Alcohol intake, Smoking tobacco, too much soft drinks and at times endurance training can also lead to Osteoporosis.

Long term usage of Certain medications like proton pump inhibitors(example omeprazole, rabiprazole, Esomeprazole etc)can also lead to Osteoporosis.

Women Love your bones too!

Woman who are past menopause or have got their ovaries surgically removed are at a higher risk than anyone else. Loss of Estrogen secretion makes the bone brittle and weak due to rapid reduction in bone mineral density also known as BMD. In India this is further compounded by vitamin D and calcium deficiency.

Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and brittle — so brittle that a fall or mild stress can cause a fracture. Osteoporosis-related fractures most commonly occur in the hip, wrist, spine. A calcium rich diet with good lifestyle (which includes physical exercise) in advanced age may be a good practice to avoid or slow down the onset of Osteoporosis.

Orthopedicians, RA physicians, Endocrinologists, Gynaecologists and general Physicians are the treating speciality doctors. A regular check-up for Bone-health is good for early diagnosis of Osteoporosis for anyone post the age of 50 and more particularly for women who has undergone oophorectomy or menopause.
