In India, more than 17 Lakh people die every year due to heart diseases and by 2030, the figure is expected to increase with 2.3 crore deaths. Around 26 percent of total deaths in India occur due to the heart diseases and diabetes.
Now let us understand some basics of Cardio-Vascular system and related ailments.
Heart disease or cardiovascular disease includes a range of conditions that affect your heart. Diseases under the heart disease umbrella include blood vessel diseases, such as coronary artery disease; heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias), and heart defects anyone is born with (congenital heart defects), among others.
Heart disease occurs when the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle become hardened and narrowed due to a buildup of plaque on the arteries’ inner walls. Plaque is the accumulation of fat, cholesterol, and other substances. As plaque continues to build up in the arteries, blood flow to the heart is reduced.
Heart disease can lead to a heart attack. A heart attack happens when an artery becomes totally blocked with plaque, preventing vital oxygen and nutrients from getting to the heart. A heart attack can cause permanent damage to the heart muscle.
Cardiovascular disease symptoms can be different for men and women. Men are more likely to have chest pain; women are more likely to have other symptoms along with chest pain, such as shortness of breath, nausea and extreme fatigue.
